About Us
Who Are We?
We are a church belonging to the Lord Jesus Christ that meets in Harrisburg, PA. We are simply a group of Christians seeking to serve God based on what He has revealed in His word–the Bible. We are not part of any larger denominational organization–we are simply seeking to be Christians.
Our Mission
“And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.” – Eph 4:11-13 (NASB)
Our aim is to glorify God by carefully following His word. Our end goal is to individually and collectively look more like Christ: “until we all attain… to the fullness of Christ.” We want to love like Christ, teach what Christ and His apostles taught, and live lives that would point people to Christ.
What We Do Together
Since our goal is to please God, we try to base everything we do in our worship directly on Scripture:
- We assemble to worship God – “When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching… Let all things be done for edification.” 1 Cor 14:26
- We pray to God, praising Him and asking for His blessing: “I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men… Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and dissension.” 1 Tim 2:1,8
- We read and study God’s word together: “They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship…” Acts 2:42
- We remember the death of Jesus Christ every Sunday by taking the Lord Supper: “For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.” 1 Cor 11:26
- We praise God in song and teach one another with unaccompanied vocal music: “Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” Col 3:16
- We give financially as God has first given to us: “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Cor 9:7 (A note for visitors: we do not ask our guests for any donations–we simply have a box available where members give as they have decided.)
- We use our collective resources to support the spreading of the gospel and to help Christians in need: “So also the Lord directed those who proclaim the gospel to get their living from the gospel.” 1 Cor 9:14, “And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common; and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need.” Acts 2:44-45
- We seek to hold each other accountable and encourage each other to love more and to do good: “and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.” Heb 10:24-25
What We Do Individually
Worship is part of what we do, but the focus of what Jesus taught was not only “going to church.” We want to please God not just on Sunday, but with our entire lives.
- We seek to love God with all of our heart and to love our neighbor as ourself: “Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:29-31
- We seek to deny ourselves, take up our cross every day, and follow Jesus: “And he said to all, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.’” Luke 9:23
- We seek to get to know each other, encourage each other, and help each other with our spiritual battles: “But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called ‘today,’ that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.” Heb 3:13
- We get together, share food, and enjoy social activities together: “And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts” Acts 2:46
- We look for opportunities to give to any who may be in need and seek to live a pure life: “Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” James 1:27
- We seek to share the good news of Christ with others: “Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” 2 Cor 5:20
- We seek to keep ourselves and each other from being conformed to the world: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Rom 12:2
